Douglas Roberts

Douglas Roberts was born in Kadina in 1919, and was a painter, teacher and foundation member of the South Australian branch of the Contemporary Art Society (1942). He was senior lecturer and, subsequently, principal, of the SA School of Art during the 1960s and 70s, until his death in 1976. In her book Adelaide Angries: South Australian Painting of the 1940s, Jane Hylton refers to Roberts as being among the youngest of the "rebels" and "in many ways the most outspoken and volatile of the rebels and his art the most forceful." His associates included David Dallwitz, Ruth Tuck, Anton Riebe, Ivor Francis, Dorrit Black, Jacqueline Hick, and Max Harris.

Exhibited here is a 1964 oil on canvas entitled View of a River, for sale at $900.
