James Ashton James Ashton (father of Sir William Ashton) was born in the Isle of Man in 1859, arrived in Australia in 1884, and died in Adelaide in 1935. He founded the Norwood Art School, and is recorded as having founded art galleries in five SA towns as well as the Academy of Arts in Adelaide. He was a fine painter of seascapes in particular, with auction prices up to $12,000 achieved in recent years. Sunset with Vessels is a fine oil on canvas, signed lower left and measures 34.5 x 49.5 cms. |
